What do both camps have in common?

Close to home with quality program, Fire Mountain and Black Mountain provide amazing summer camp activities for every boy, regardless of age.  Scouts who have not earned the rank of First Class have the opportunity to enter the “Pathfinders” program – spending time everyday working on advancement for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.  For older boys, the high adventure programs at either camp is a perfect fit.  High-Adventure programs include: Climbing; Mountain Biking; Small Boat Sailing; Wind Surfing; Mountain Boarding; Shotgun Shooting; Extended Hikes; Snorkeling; BSA Lifeguard; and more.

In addition to these activities, each camp offers a variety of “standard” merit badge classes. Both camps also offer a very unique feature not found at other camps – afternoon patrol times.  These program sessions (from patrol swims, shooting, hiking, COPE, and more) provide activities for patrols to work together, have fun, strengthen bonds, and strengthen your troop.  The Mount Baker Council follows the “patrol method” – utilizing the Scout leadership laid out in the Boy Scouts to set program, run troop meetings, set a troop calendar, and run the troop.  Utilizing this valuable patrol program time helps encourage your Scouts to take these important lessons home to troop meetings.

What is different about Black Mountain and Fire Mountain?

Black Mountain is a small, intimate camp nestled in the foothills of Mount Baker.  Space limitations ensures your troop shares the camp with roughly 200 total Scouts, creating smaller class sizes and more one-on-one time with staff.  Unique to Black Mountain is a high COPE course designed to provide older Scouts and patrols challenging, team building activities, built on trust and acceptance 50 feet above the ground.  Also, Black Mountain has a new camp director - Jim Summers – who’s eager to provide a world class staff and summer camp experience to all who attend.

Fire Mountain, in Mount Vernon, is lead by camp director, Jordan Telford.  Utilizing over 650 acres of camp property, Fire Mountain spaces program out around the camp to leave an open feeling, yet provides a great opportunity for  your Scouts to learn not only from the staff, but also through friends they make from troops across the country and world.  With a private lake, miles and miles of hiking trails, and programs for new Scouts and seasoned campers alike, your Scouts will love Fire Mountain.

My troop visits MBC camps during the year, why would we want to attend summer camp at Fire Mountain or Black Mountain too?

Many troops utilize our camps during the off season for a variety programs – from OA events to Camporee’s, to individual troop events.  This is a great use of our camps and is one of the reasons the Mount Baker Council provides and promotes off season use.

However, off season events are no comparison to the full program offered during the summer camp season.  Fire Mountain and Black Mountain come alive during the summer.  Program, staff, and interaction with scouts from across the country provide your scouts experiences that will last their entire life time.

What options are available to help a Scout pay for summer camp?

The Mount Baker Council believes every boy should have the opportunity to attend a summer camp.  We have money set aside specifically to provide Scouts in need with the funding necessary to attend summer camp.  These “Camperships,” combined with fundraising opportunities, ensures all Scouts can attend our camps.

Camperships are only available for Mount Baker Council units, for use at Fire Mountain or Black Mountain.  For more information on Camperships, or to apply for financial help with camp, please contact the Scout office at 425-338-0380 (Everett area) or 360-734-3940 (Bellingham area).

Our Senior Patrol Leader wasn’t able to spend much time on personal advancement during summer camp, can he attend camp with another troop?

Absolutely!  Your Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader are both eligible to attend a second week of camp as a provisional camper.  This gives your Scout the time necessary to focus on the needs of the troop during your week of camp, and gives him a week to go back to camp for half price and work on personal advancement.

Because of family commitments, our son can not attend summer camp with his troop.  Is there still a way he can attend camp?

Yes, a Scout may come as a lone Scout. He will be partnered with a troop at camp the week he can attend. He will stay in the host troop’s campsite, eat and do troop functions with that troop but work on his own advancement schedule. Arrangements must be made by the Camp Director prior to registration.  Other conditions may apply.  Please contact the Camp Director of the camp your scout would like to attend for additional information.
