How to Become a Trained Boy Scout, Troop Committee, Varsity or Venturing
Leader
The Scouts in your unit deserve the best possible
program you can provide them.
Adult Leader Training courses provide you with the information
you need to be an effective leader.
Following are the steps that will allow you to be a “Trained”
leader. We ask that you
register for training courses well in advance so that we can have adequate
staff and training materials for you.

Registrations received less than 1 week prior to course will
cost more. To register

Step 1:
Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for any new
volunteer and is to be taken immediately after a new leader registers.
Fast Start is a self-paced course, either web-based or VCR tape,
specific to your branch of Scouting.

. There are also VCR tapes in both council service centers.
Step 2:
New Leader Essentials
New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that
highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.
Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders all take
the same course. Leaders
who have already completed Step 3 are still required to complete this
step to be considered trained.

Required for all registered leaders.

No charge for this training course.

Duration:
1 ½ hour course.
Step 3:
Leader Specific Training
These training courses provide the specialized knowledge
a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Each course is designed
for a specific leadership position.
Troop Committee

Attendees:
Required for Troop and Team committee members.
Cost:
No charge for this training course.

Register at Council Service Center - Deadline 1 week prior to
start of training
Duration:
2 hour course.
Scoutmaster
and Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training
Attendees:
Required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters.
Cost:
$10.00 prior to registration deadline, $15.00 after registration
deadline.

Duration:
6 hour course (with a break for lunch)
Varsity Leader
Specific Training
Attendees:
Required for Varsity Coaches and Assistant Varsity Coaches.
Cost:
$10.00 prior to registration deadline, $15.00 after registration
deadline.

Duration:
4 hour course
Venturing
Leader Specific Training
Attendees:
Required for Venturing Advisors, Assistant Venturing Advisors
and for Crew Committee Members.
Cost:
$10.00 prior to registration deadline, $15.00 after registration
deadline.

Duration:
5 hour course
Step 4: Outdoor
Skills Training
This is an outdoors Scout Craft skills course that
is only required for direct contact leaders in Boy Scout Troops and
Varsity. Webelos Den Leaders
are also recommended to take this course.
Venturing leaders are welcome to attend but this training is
not required for them to be considered trained.

& Assistant Varsity Coaches.
Recommended for Webelos Den Leaders.

$15.00 registration, meals included in fee.
