Heroes Start Here! Learn How

Our Heroes Start Here recruitment campaign is ready to leap tall buildings!  And so are our Cub Scouts, Leaders and their Packs!  Look for your District to host a special kick-off during their August Round Table; and make sure to schedule a time with your District Director or District Executive to check out handbooks and capes for your new Scouts.

Has your Pack taken on the challenges to receive handbooks and capes for new Scouts?  In addition to being more powerful than a locomotive, Cub Scout units needed to attend the 2019 Fall Membership Recruiting Webinar back in May (if you missed this, schedule a meeting with your Membership Chair to review the material).  Ensure you have a New Member Coordinator (NMC) registered and trained, and plan and commit to host a Join Night. 


If your Join Night plan is not up your sleeve – check your utility belt! Not there?  Here is a quick reference to the plan:

Set up your Join Night with 5 Stations.  Remember, this should be a separate event from your Popcorn Kick-Off or a Pack Meeting.  Incorporate our Heroes theme into your night.  Are you wearing your cape?

Station 1 – WELCOME:  Greet every family and explain the process.  Have parent(s) sign in and leave contact information.  Hand out a parent orientation guide.  Have families visit each station to complete the sign-up process.

Station 2 – WHAT WE DO:  Share the excitement of Cub Scouting!  Speak to several families at once.  Hand out your Pack’s fact sheets, calendar, costs and contact information.  Include uniform information and show off what your Pack’s awesome activities!

Station 3 – REGISTRATION:  Help parents complete applications (paper or online) and a family survey.  Answer questions about fees, payments.  Remember financial assistance is available.  Ensure parents know when and where the next meeting will be held. 

Station 4 – CHECKOUT:  Collect fees for BSA registration and Boys’ Life subscriptions (are their Pack fees, too?).  Collect family survey sheets.  Give parents a FREE HANDBOOK and Scout a FREE CAPE!  Share the excitement and watch them leap!

Station 5 – Q & A:  Confirm parents know when and where the first meeting is.  How your unit communicates information (email, newsletter, etc.)?  Have your den leaders & assistant den leaders available to talk about their dens.  Introduce your New Member Coordinator (NMC).

Packs should plan to turn in their applications and fees (and any extra books/capes) on September 27 at your district’s Heroes Unite Turn In Night. A slice of pizza and a super-cool, heroes thank you from Mount Baker Council will be provided.


Calling all cape wearers!  Our Heroes Start Here theme continues…………with a share your best unit photo depicting this theme on Instagram.  Post your pic on September 28.  Add the following hashtags:   #mountbakerbsa and #mbcheroes.  The photo that receives the most “likes” from October 1-5, 2019, will win a special prize!

Stampede at Fire Mountain on October 19th will continue the Heroes Start Here theme.  So, don’t forget your capes!!!  That’s for all Scouts and leaders, too!  Everyone can get in on the fun.


7UP Club – all packs are challenged to have 1 Lion Den of 7 scouts AND 1 Tiger Den of 7 Scouts by December 31, 2019.  This 7UP Club will be invited to Fire Mountain for a FREE day of fun with a fishing frenzy, archery and more!  This will be scheduled in late April 2020.

Drive for 5! – all Packs are challenged to add 5 more girls (from last year’s total) to their Unit, by December 31, 2019.  For completing this challenge, all young ladies in the pack will be invited to spend a FREE afternoon and evening campout, sort of a Gal’s Night Out with some of our local Scout BSA Troops for girls!  This will take place in late April 2020 at Fire Mountain.
