Alternate Programs Scouting@Home Program

The Council has worked hard to create monthly themes that our Scouting@Home Committee feels will provide most units with enough material to make a great monthly program.  But if you are looking for more ideas, these should help.

Cub Scout Meeting Ideas

Yo-Yo Preview Adventure

This adventure makes for an excellent in-person Pack Meeting and those meeting virtually can have a Yo-Yo expert visit your pack, put on a show and show your scouts how to Yo-Yo like a champ…or at least how to get started.

More information at Yo-Yo Preview Adventure

Contact Jardin, Bryan at [email protected].  He can help schedule a yo-yo expert and get you started on a discounted and customized scout yo-yos for your pack.

Campfire

You can always do a Pack Campout.  Assign all Dens with appropriate Campfire presentations:
  • Skits
  • Jokes
  • Ghost Stories
  • Sing alongs
  • Stunts

STEM

Stem demos and classes can be really fun.  Mix up live demos and explanations with prerecorded ones.  Make if fun.

Have various den leaders and scouts show off their Weird Science skills.

Cub Comedy

Yuk it up with stand-up comedy and silly skits.  Den leaders should bring plenty of material and assign scouts to share a joke or skit.

Don’t forget the basics:
  • Dad Jokes
  • Run-ons
  • Silly banter between Den Leader
  • And don’t be afraid to bring the corn

Only rule is – it needs to be scout appropriate.

Guest Speaker

A dynamic Guest Speaker can really make for a memorable event.  This is what has worked in the past:

  • Firefighter – especially if they can do a tour of the station and trucks
  • Artist – teach scouts how to draw
  • Shark diver
  • Police officer with K-9 partner
  • Military vet with a great story
  • Community leader – the right leader and right questions can work

History of Scouting

A presentation on the history of scouting can be fun and informative.  Talk about interesting aspect of the past.  Assign each den leader to talk about something special.  Also consider:

  • Getting an Order of the Arrow rep to speak
  • Get an older scouts to talk about Scouts BSA
  • Talk about Explores, Venturing and Sea Scouts
  • Show picture of our leaders doing scout stuff

Cub Lecture/Class

Some people can pull this one off, but it is really hard.  The lecture needs to be fun, engaging and short.  Good luck.

  • Teach a Skill
  • Go on a virtual tour

Pack Meeting Plans

The BSA has Pack Meeting Plans ready to use.  They can help provide a framework and a few idea to run a meeting and are worth looking at.

Small Pack Plans

Crossroads Council has developed an excellent curriculum for small packs with just a few scout per den.  This program allows packs to run activities that will cover Adventure for multiple ranks.

Some packs will find these resources useful.
